In the afternoon of August 2, the men and women of APO Cement Corporation, together with CEMEX President for Southern Europe, Middle East, Africa and Asia, Mr. Jose Luis Saenz de Miera and CEMEX Philippines President Mr. Jaime Ruiz de Haro, led the celebration of APO Cement achieving 4 years or 1,460 days of no lost time accident. Joining the event to give support and share in the thrill of having sustained 4-years without accident were Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia, Naga Mayor Valdemar Chiong, Department of Environment and Natural Resources officials, and members of the CEMEX Philippines' Executive and Management Committee.

"When I got here today, I couldn't help but remember how it was when I first came here years ago, and I must say, you did a very good job here in APO", said Mr. Saenz de Miera.

Governor Garcia who cancelled her other appointments enthusiastically said, "It is only right for me to be here personally and congratulate each and everyone of you for this momentous achievement".

The event abounded with messages of gratitude and exhortations for a job well done. And rightly so, as this achievement highlights CEMEX's commitment to its EHS policy - a policy that its operations are safe for its personnel, community and the environment, ensuring that accident prevention, safeguarding employee health and environmental protection are an integral part of our business philosophy.

"Our prime challenge is continuous improvement in our safety performance, and this achievement raises the bar and asks that each of us increase our daily awareness and collaboration to make our operations a safe place to be in," Mr. Saenz de Miera remarked.

No achievement is complete without recognition. As the 4-years zero accident is a collective effort, plaques of recognition were also distributed to cite the achievements of individuals in the areas of safety promotion and practice.

Mr. Ruiz de Haro's closing message reflects what the days ahead should be, "As we move forward, armed with greater efficiency, we shall aim for years and years of operating responsibly - not only because this helps chart our business success, but it also helps provide a better place for us all".

As the event ended, the challenge continues - the challenge to keep safety a priority, at all times.
